New Agreed record and TAC for the Atlanto-Scandian Herring (Norwegian Spring Spawning Herring) signed for 2001: significant reduction in total catches
In the attempt to keep the stock level of the Atlanto-Scandian herring above Bpa of 5 million tonnes, the Parties agreed at the "NEAFC Coastal States meeting on Atlanto-Scandian Herring on 18 October 2000 in Skagen, Denmark, to restrict their fishing on the herring stock in 2001 to a maximum limit of 850000 t on the basis of the following quotas:
Norway: 484500 t
Russian Fed.: 115740 t
Faeroe Islands: 46420 t
Iceland: 132080 t
European Community: 71260 t
Additional catches in international waters have been 2'000 t in 2000, parties recommend to NEAFC to reduce these.
Signed by the Heads of Delegations of the European Community, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Norway, and the Russian Federation.
Comment: This TAC is significantly more than recommended by ICES scientists (753'000 t), but about 30% less than the TAC set for 2000 (1'252'000 t).
