Alaska Roe Fishery ends after one hour in 2001

In Alaska the sac roe herring fishery ended after only one hour in the season 2001, as reported by Fishing News International Vol.40, No.5. The herring was caught by purse seiners or gill netters. The one hour fishing season was divided into four 15 minute openings at the end of March in which 51 seiners took part. In spite of such short fishing season a total of 12.376 t was caught, exceeding the guideline level set by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game by about 16%. Apparently the duration of the season was still too long to match the target of catching only 10.600 t.

The fish were transferred from the catchers to large tenders which again delivered the catches to Japanese freighters. The catch is processed in Japan and is, according to an estimate of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, worth about $ 6 million. After removing the roe the rest and male individuals are made into fishmeal.
