The ICES Planning Group for Herring Surveys (PGHERS) met in Hamburg, Germany
PGHERS, one of two ICES survey planning groups exclusively dealing with clupeids, held its annual meeting from Dec 10th-14th, 2001 at the Bundesforschungsanstalt für Fischerei in Hamburg, Germany. 10 scientists from Norway, Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands and UK/Scotland collated data from acoustic surveys and larvae surveys conducted during 2001. Chaired by Paul Fernandes (UK/Scotland), the group furthermore discussed survey design and various issues related to quality control (i.e. age reading, maturity determination, scrutinizing, combination of data).
Preliminary results of the North Sea summer hydroacoustic survey show that abundant yearclasses have entered the North Sea spawning stock. Detailed results will be presented to the ICES Herring Assessment Working Group in March, and the report will be available at the ICES website: http://www.ices.dk/committe/lrc/wg/pghers/pghers.htm (from May 2002 on for the public).
The working group decided already last year to use the clupea.net website to post important documents. Research reports and manuals for various surveys will therefore be available soon.
