WP A-D Workshops

WP A: Initial Workshop

An initial co-ordination workshop attended by all participants where final agreements will be reached on issues related to sampling protocol, labelling, data base management and sampling facilities (i.e., ship time and timing, regions and spawning, juvenile and mixed aggregations targeted, contact with fishers).

We expect to discuss how and what type of collection data will be recorded and logged, sampling protocols specific for each technique. Geographic and temporal coverage of spawning, juvenile and mixed aggregations. Software for data handling and management, etc.

WP B: Annual Meetings

Present and discuss annually the scientific implications to the assessment and conservation of stock components defined through genotypic and phenotypic techniques, and their age related, spatial and seasonal mixing.

A short summary of the results and the description of the available database will be presented at the ICES HAWG (the Herring Assessment Working Group for the Area South of 62oN) meetings in ICES headquarters each year in March and discussed with the working group members.

WP C: Multivariate Statistics Techniques Workshop

Discuss and confirm planned techniques for the multivariate analyses which will enable prediction of group membership from the mix of data variables collected in WP’s 02-06.
Finalise database structure to enable analyses to be performed.

Appropriate multivariate statistical models will be evaluated prior to the workshop. During the workshop there will be a demonstration of methods used in a project similar to WESTHER. Partners will have the opportunity to discuss their individual workpackage results showing group membership of herring stock components in western European waters. The database structure for the multivariate statistical analyses will be finalised. Analyses will be divided among the Partners.

WP D: Presentation of results of management advice to the ICES HAWG

Present the scientific implications of WESTHER results in relation to age composition, spatial and seasonal mixing. The results will be operationally expressed for different management scenarios.

A summary of the results and the description of the available database will be presented at the ICES HAWG (the Herring Assessment Working Group for the Area South of 62oN) meeting in ICES headquarters each year in March and discussed with the working group members.
